Currently curated by Nicholas McGill/@HoldBtoRun, Put This in Your Piehole is a culmination of snacks beloved, soft drinks popped open, and the wistful days of looking up at a parent or grandparent as they checked out at the supermarket with big, hopeful eyes, wishing that this day, no different than any other, would be graced with the taste of chocolate, of caramel, of nougat. It’s a celebration of a tongue to be tingled with bubbles, a heart full of anticipation in the drive-thru, nostrils catching the scent of a stick of gum: cinnamon or mint.
As a kid, my love of food grew with each year, but I always craved a Twix, a Coke, the couple of nights a month Pizza Hut got ordered. I lived for the days I got to have an Italian sub from Publix, not quite understanding the role that each ingredient played but loving the taste. But it was when Sprite Remix first appeared that I learned that the tastes I knew, the tastes that I already loved could be different. They could the same and new and newly exciting all over again. Sprite could taste like Skittles, Starburst could look like jellybeans, and Snickers could both a candy bar and an ice cream at the same time.
It wasn’t however, until 2020 that a friend and partner introduced me to food writing. Fortunately, I’d been professional writer at a point in the past and hobbyist[read: amateur] for a long time. As a jack of many trades, I’d picked up a camera at some point and gotten comfortable using it, making the process of learning to take images, edit and write reviews an experience I easily picked up on.
As it stands, Put This in Your Piehole is both a celebration of and honing of my craft while highlighting my love for one of life’s greatest joys. Come share my experiences as I relate wistful, taste-based memories and describe the sweet, the salty, and the caramel, nougat and peanuts packed between.
Who knows, maybe you’ll find something you like so much you’ll want to— you know— put in your piehole.
